Ensuring Safe and Compliant Rooftop Access: 6 Essential Tips

Mar 10, 2025, 19:23 by User Not Found

When it comes to accessing dangerous areas, cutting corners simply isn't an option. A poorly designed access stairway or catwalk on the roof not only compromises your team's safety but can also lead to serious compliance issues. This oversight can result in hefty penalties, unnecessary repair costs, and potentially halt some operations. To avoid these risks, it's crucial to invest in a reliable, compliant access systems from the start. Here are six key tips to help you implement secure and compliant rooftop access.

1. Assess the Variables

Before you begin planning your access system, you need to fully understand how it will be used. Ask yourself these questions:

  • How frequently will the access point be used, and by how many people?
  • Will the system need to support only human weight or also heavy loads/Condensers?
  • Is your rooftop sloped, and will the walkway need to follow this incline?
  • How long will the walkway span, and how often will the flooring need to be supported?

Having answers to these questions is crucial before moving forward with design and material selection.

2. Choose the Right Materials

Selecting the appropriate materials is essential for any rooftop access system. Materials vary in terms of load-bearing capacity, weight, and resistance to corrosion, rust, and chemicals. You must choose the right material based on your specific application. Additionally, ensuring that you select a material with the correct profile will enhance the safety and durability of the access system.

3. Prioritize Slip Resistance

When your access system is exposed to the elements, slip resistance becomes a priority. Look for materials with serrated grating or similar features designed to enhance grip. For example, Gripspan provides a slip resistance rating of R13, as per the Oil Wet Ramp test. It also complies with Australian Standard AS1657 S.45, which tests whether a 15mm diameter ball can pass through flooring to the area underneath. This helps ensure a safer, more secure working environment especially if working under a platform or catwalk.

4. Ensure Proper Drainage

Standing water can create slippery surfaces and contribute to rust formation. An effective drainage system is vital for maintaining a clean, dry, and safe working environment. Employees working at height already face numerous safety challenges—don't make it harder by allowing pooled water to become an additional hazard. Proper drainage is key to minimizing risks and creating a more efficient workplace.

5. Avoid Disrupting the Roof Structure

While rooftop access is designed to keep workers safe, it's also important not to interfere with the integrity of the building's roof. The roof is engineered to fulfill a specific function, and adding access systems should not compromise its structure. Fortunately, products like Gripspan are quicker and easier to install than traditional grating, requiring fewer fixings and supports. One of Gripspan’s main features is being lightweight thus ensuring the integrity of the roof’s structural engineering while still providing a safe access system.

6. Partner with a Trusted Supplier

Lastly, work with a supplier who has a deep understanding of your industry’s needs. Webforge Locker has decades of experience providing access solutions across a range of sectors, from water treatment plants to oil rigs. By collaborating with a knowledgeable supplier, you can be confident that your access systems will be safe, durable, and compliant with all regulations.

By following these six tips, you can ensure that your rooftop access system is not only compliant but also safe and reliable for your team. For more information on our access and walkway products, reach out to Webforge Locker today.
